NO CCTV on the Cowley Road campaign

Oxford police chief Supt Brendan O'Dowda wants to install CCTV along the Cowley Road, East Oxford. He has made it his personal crusade to get cameras installed. He has been joined in his quest by Andrew Smith MP and the Oxford University students' union.

This campaign been set up to counter their mis-information.

NO CCTV presented a report to the East Area parliament in November 2007 urging them to look at the paltry evidence of cctv's effectiveness and to consider the dangers of cctv to local residents. Decisions by elected representatives should be evidence based and can have far reaching implications.

Britain is the most spied upon nation in the world, yet we don't have the lowest crime rate. CCTV simply does not work and it is a waste of money. It goes against Britain's common law value of 'innocent until proven guilty' and with more sophisticated technology and the forthcoming National Identity Register it is simply another tool to intrude on the lives of law abiding citizens and track us all.
